  21 This site was built with a number of open-source software products. I feel it
  22 is important to give enough credit to the involved people, who spend their
  23 free time developing and supporting these software suites.

  25 Open-source software has numerous advantages over proprietary, commercial
  26 products:

  28 - It is developed by users of the software, not people trying to make money by
  29   selling it. As a direct consequence, it doesn't suffer from the marketing
  30   syndrome, and it provides the features that users need, not those which the
  31   company wants to sell.

  33 - The source code is available to everyone. Not only does this mean that
  34   anyone can modify the product to better suit their needs, it also greatly
  35   facilitates problem-solving, since one can inspect the source of any
  36   problem.

  38 - Open-source software has a large community using and supporting it. Direct
  39   help from the developers is absolutely no rarity, and if they are not
  40   available, then numerous (experienced) users are ready to help one, and to
  41   work with one to solve any problems.

  43 - And last, but very much not least: Open-source software is free. No
  44   complicated and capitalistic licensing models, no "software assurance" or
  45   similarly flawed license subscriptions, no problems with upgrades, and a lot
  46   more money left for other things.
